Now Playing: Jordan Alexander’s ‘Take Me Out Tonight’

Three years ago, Jordan Alexander was a relative unknown. The Canadian-born singer-songwriter has quickly risen and made a name for herself among emerging artists, with her live performances also earning her recognition as an artist to watch. She’s shared the stage with Tegan and Sara and Jess Glynne, and as an openly gay artist, she’s been named “the next gay pop star” by AfterEllen.  In response, she’s received ample support from the LGBT+ community.

All of that being said, Alexander’s recently released single “Take Me Out Tonight” is your next road trip theme song. It’s unmistakably pop, but there’s a certain dreamscape ambiance in the production that puts you in the passenger seat, window rolled down, letting your hand glide against the wind. It’s one of those fun, feel-good songs that reminds you to step back and not take everything so seriously without a hint of silliness, or overreaching from a creative perspective.

Additionally, Alexander’s vocals are those genre-fluid, sultry vocals that don’t back her into a strictly pop corner. There’s something about the artistry of the lighter track being enriched by Alexander’s voice that is refreshing. The track relies on her to bring it to life, and that’s something to be noted in a modern industry obsessed with building tracks to fit an ear-pleasing algorithm to carry an artist, rather than the other way around.  “Take Me Out Tonight” is a preview for Jordan Alexander’s full length LP, “Lonely Hearts Club.”

The music video, directed by Jarvis Church, is a fun, lighthearted video that’s partially a dedication to Alexander’s grandmother. And, really, who doesn’t love a cool grandma?
