“ An Organized Life Is A Happy Life”~ Christina Giaquinto

1.) Write everything down

  • Do you ever feel like your mind won’t stop running? Between work, family, things to do, people to call, what groceries you need etc, the list never ends. Our brains become consumed with mental clutter as it tries to sort through everything that crosses our mind.
  • Carry a small notebook around at all times, and write down whatever comes to mind. It does not necessarily have to be things for your to do list. Write down anything and everything you think of to reducing the mental clutter.
  • Some examples of things to write are:
    • Someone you have to call
    • Something you need to buy
    • A paper you need to sign for the kid’s school
    • A restaurant someone told you about
    • A goal you have
    • A gift idea for your mom
    • A TV show you want to start watching
    • Things your boss told you to do at work

2.) Have systems in place

  • Having systems in place will drastically affect the quality of your happiness. Your goal is to create a system for as many areas of your life as possible.
  • An example of a system for physical clutter is knowing where to put your keys everyday when you get home. Way too many people lose this item every single day! By having a designated system for where to keep them, the quality of your life will improve and your stress will go down.
  • An example of a system for mental clutter would be a journal to hold all your ideas for your business. Ideas come to you at the most random times, and then hours later you are trying to remember what that brilliant idea was. By writing it down the second you think of it, your mental clutter will start to fade away.

3.) Plan ahead

  • Many people feel there is not enough time and that the weeks and months move so fast, but it doesn’t have to be that way! If you plan ahead and have things mapped out, you will be able to do so much more.
  • If you haven’t seen your friends in a while, plan ahead and schedule a brunch. If you need a getaway with your husband, plan when the best month will be, and possible dates to take off from work. Always look ahead! There are many moments that are meant be spontaneous, but planning definitely helps you do more. You will be more productive, travel more, see more people and ultimately be happier because you get to experience so many incredible things. Planning definitely has its perks!

4.) Clean before you go to bed

  • It takes discipline, but taking the time to clean before bed is so important. It’s not about dusting, vacuuming and cleaning the house from top to bottom.  It is about tidying up every night before you go to bed.
  • One of the most important rooms to focus on is the kitchen. If the dishes are put in the dishwasher and the counters wiped down, you will feel AMAZING when you wake up and come downstairs to a beautiful clean kitchen! It instantly starts your day on the right foot.
  • Cleaning before bed is a habit, but once applied to your life, you will see how much it improves the quality of your life. Do not let the clutter overwhelm you. Start to practice this life changing habit for 10 minutes every night.

5.) Organize your money

  • Your finances are one of the most important categories in your life, but so often it’s a mess. Do you know what your budget is? Are you spending too much? Are you saving enough? Are you investing your money into your future? Do you have a financial plan?
  • Finances are one of the most stressful areas in one’s life. By getting organized, and having a plan, you can feel confident with your spending and financial future.

6.) Plan your travels

  • Many people love the idea of traveling, but never go anywhere. Organize your travels and start to see the world!
  • Create a travel board of all the places you wish to visit, and then start mapping them out. Look at your budget and your calendar, and write down possible dates to travel. If your budget is the biggest reason why you cant travel, organize a plan to save money. If you saved 10 dollars a day would that help ? Or maybe you need to skip that fifth latte from Starbucks. Being aware of how much you need will help you start to save.
  • By thinking about where you want to go, and how much you need to spend to achieve that, you will be closer than you think to your destination! By having a plan and mapping out your travel goals, you will start to check off destination by destination.

7.) File your papers

  • Papers, papers, and more papers! They never end. The stack of mail gets higher every time it comes into your home, and then add the school papers, work papers, home papers and you have a mountain of clutter. Create a file system to organize your papers for each category – home, school, work.
  • Start a routine of sorting through your mail. This will help you tremendously! Do not let them accumulate past a couple of days.
  • Whether you prefer to organize your papers digitally or in a traditional file system, make sure everything gets categorized, filed and stored away. Most of your papers are trash, but the rest must be filed.

8.) Upload your photos

  • Photos are a huge clutter problem for people. Thousands of photos stay hidden on our phones, memory cards go missing, and no one ever gets to actually see the photos. But we continuously keep snapping away and taking more and more photos. Photos are beautiful memories that should be organized and looked at with family and friends. Although its often on the bottom of the priority list, try and allocate enough time to your photo projects! You will be so happy when you’re sitting down looking at all your beautiful adventures.
  • Once a week empty your camera’s photos to your computer or Dropbox.
  • Upload your cameras photos to your desktop after each event and label them in a folder.

9.) Take control of your time

  • There are 24 hours in a day, and how you use them is up to you. Know when it is time to say NO, and only do what makes you happy. People often feel torn in eighty different directions. You cannot do everything with everyone at once.
  • By organizing your planner, you can figure out where you want to spend your time and how much time you have left. You will feel so much more in control of your life!

10.) Prepare the night before

  • Organized people take the time to prepare the night before. It may take you a couple more minutes each night, but you will feel less rushed and frantic in the morning. A little sacrifice the night before will help you the next day!
  • Certain things you can do to prepare are:
    • Lay out your clothes
    • Have your lunch ready
    • Write your to do list
    • Know what time you have to leave in the morning
