Jewel: A Pioneer Spirit is Never Broken

In an interview with Rolling Stone, in which she discusses her most recent album, Picking Up the Pieces, Jewel says, “It was almost like my 18-year-old self was able to tap myself on the shoulder and say, ‘You need to be brave in this way again; you need to be courageous in this way again; this is where you got dull and covered up, and domesticated.’ And I’m not talking about marriage. I’m talking about your soul, your passion, your fire.”
“I am the accumulation of the dreams of generations,” she sings, in a song titled “My Father’s Daughter,” featuring Dolly Parton. It’s a song about being in touch with your roots, where you come from, and growing from that foundation.
The album came out along with Jewel’s memoir, Never Broken, both of which are about a journey of self-reflection and learning to face hardships, rather than hide from them. Jewel gives us hope, assures us that there is always light to be found, and tells us to “Be the architect of [our] dreams.”
